Imagery is the world's most ancient source for healing power and it plays an important role in medicine, including diagnosis, pain, illness, procedures and recovery. These mental processes employ the senses: sight, hearing, feeling, taste, position movement, emotion and bodily change. Imagery bridges communication between sensations of the body, emotions and perception.
Consider these examples:
- A pain sensation in the body that burns like 'fire.'
- A blood flowing as slow as molasses.'
Imagery affects the body intensely and on very deep levels. Imagery, or mental pictures, are powerful tools in the creation of health and I believe it is underutilized. It is well known that mental images influence neuro-muscular behavior, alter physiology and strengthen intuitive skills. Imagery initiates change in the mind which influences the brain and your whole body. The mind/body communicates back and forth through the central nervous system.
Imagine a spider (mental picture) --> you recoil (neuro-muscular tension) --> feel stressed (adrenaline rush) ... lingering upset.
The inner landscape of the body changes at nano second speeds with a simple shift of imagery. We move in and out of various feeling and mental states all through the day. Imagery conveys information about flow, space, force, rhythm, direction, and transition. Everything we experience has a corresponding image.
We recognize the power of negative thoughts and imagination on health. Research on stress and observation show the causal factor of a negative mind on health. Stress reduces immunity, increases pain and slows down recovery. Anxiety and stress is generally counter productive when the goal is to enbue healing opportunities.
If this is indeed correct, then the reverse must also be true.
We can influence our bodies and health with powerful positive health enabling imagery. This alteration of mind can effectively potentiate an individual in preparation for, and through the process, of surgery and recovery. Alchemical Hypnotherapy is one key processing system that empowers and fortifies mental and physical strength. Imagery when intentionally therapeutic strengthens awarenesses of Inner Healer embodiment, a power deft at creating change.
The mind/body transforms an experience into pictures, feelings, sounds & movement, that creates the feel of an energetic movement of the body. Someone describes that while under medication she 'felt like she was spinning,' or a pain was "stabbing." The mind creates images that are translated into words. These expressions offer clues into tangible connections for us to understand, rather than complicated medical jargon.
Imagery includes all of the senses -- vision, sound, feeling, kinesthetics (movement), even taste and smell. Imagine if all these senses were used to create a deeper awareness and trust in the body's ability to perform. To project outward strength, power and competence in your performance requires mind body synchronization.
